Taika Waititi is back, but not with a wild superhero adventure. This time, he brings a gentle, emotional sci-fi story called Klara and the Sun—and it is already making people talk. The film is based on Nobel Prize-winning author Kazuo Ishiguro’s bestselling 2021 novel and stars Jenna Ortega in the lead role.
Ortega plays Klara, an Artificial Friend, or “AF,” a solar-powered companion android. She is designed to keep humans company, but she slowly develops a deep bond with Josie, a sick teenage girl whose family buys her. The story follows Klara as she tries to understand love, loss, family, and what it truly means to care for someone.
The film is set in a dystopian future where genetic engineering has created sharp divisions among people. Society is isolated, technology is everywhere, and human connection feels fragile. Against that cold backdrop, Klara’s innocence and loyalty bring warmth to Josie’s complicated life.
Amy Adams plays Josie’s mother, while Mia Tharia plays Josie. The cast also includes Aran Murphy, Steve Buscemi, and Natasha Lyonne, giving the film a strong mix of emotional depth and quirky energy.
More About Klara and the Sun
Waititi directs the film and co-writes it with Dahvi Waller. Michael Giacchino has composed the score, adding another layer of feeling to this futuristic yet deeply human story. Klara and the Sun premiered at the BFI London Film Festival on October 15, 2026. It then released in theatres on October 23, 2026, through Sony Pictures.
Right now, the film is available only in cinemas. There has been no official announcement about its OTT platform or digital release date. So, if you want to experience Klara’s touching journey, a theatre visit is currently the way to go.
