Some people make you laugh so easily that you forget they might be hurting. Matthew Perry was one of them. He not only made the character of Chandler iconic, but lived it. As now he is not among us, Netflix has decided to give a tribute to his life with a docuseries ‘The One About Matthew Perry’.
From 1994 to 2004, across 236 episodes of Friends, he gave us Chandler Bing. The sarcasm, the nervous jokes, that perfectly awkward timing. Half of us still quote him without even realising it.
Offscreen, though, Perry never pretended life was a punchline. He spoke openly about his long fight with addiction, and that honesty became part of who he was. When he died in October 2023 at 54, fans lost a favourite Friend, and the world lost someone who made it a little easier to talk about recovery.
About The One About Matthew Perry
Now comes The One About Matthew Perry, the first proper deep dive into his life. It’s a three-part series directed by Emmy winner Mary Robertson, and it leans on the people who knew him best. Family, close friends, stories you probably haven’t heard.
The tone sounds gentle rather than gossipy. Yes, you’ll meet the funny guy. But you’ll also meet the generous, vulnerable, larger-than-life man behind him, and the rough road he walked to get there. His sister, Mia Perry Bowick, is one of the central voices, and the series draws on private family photos and videos that give it a warmer, more personal feel.
So, where do you watch it? It premieres on Netflix tomorrow, Tuesday, October 27, just a day before the third anniversary of his death. And yes, say ‘Chandler Forever’.
