Clayface is shaping up to be one of DC’s darkest and most intriguing releases in years. Instead of a capes-and-gadgets superhero adventure, the film dives into body horror, identity, obsession, and revenge. It follows Matt Hagen, a rising actor whose life falls apart after a brutal attack leaves his face disfigured.
Desperate to get his old life back, Hagen agrees to become a test subject for an experimental treatment. But what begins as a chance to restore his face slowly turns into a nightmare. His body begins changing into living clay, while his mind struggles to hold on to who he really is. The result is a monster born not from superpowers, but from pain, fear, and a desperate desire to be seen again.
Directed by James Watkins, Clayface is written by Mike Flanagan and Hossein Amini. The film stars Tom Rhys Harries as Matt Hagen, also known as Clayface, alongside Naomi Ackie, David Dencik, Max Minghella, and Eddie Marsan. Ackie plays Dr. Caitlyn Corr, a fringe scientist who becomes central to Hagen’s transformation and emotional journey.
What makes Clayface especially interesting is its place in the new DC Universe. It is connected to Batman’s world through one of his classic comic-book villains, but Batman does not appear in the film. There is no direct reference to him either. That creative choice allows the movie to stand on its own as a psychological horror story rather than relying on a familiar superhero cameo.
The film is part of DC Studios’ Chapter One: Gods and Monsters, the new era led by James Gunn and Peter Safran. It is also produced by Matt Reeves and Lynn Harris, adding further weight to its connection with Gotham’s dark cinematic universe.
Clayface had its world premiere at the Hollywood Legion Theater in Los Angeles on October 13, 2026. Warner Bros. Pictures is scheduled to release it in theatres on October 23, 2026. The movie was filmed across Liverpool and at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden in England, with production running from late August to early November 2025.

The cast also includes Nancy Carroll, Joshua James, Francesca Corney, Ruby Sear, and Wil Coban, though details about their characters remain under wraps. Volker Bertelmann has composed the score, which should add another unsettling layer to the film’s creepy atmosphere.
